Egypt issues arrest warrant for TV satirist

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's state prosecutors issued an arrest warrant Saturday for a popular television satirist for allegedly insulting Islam and the country's president, in the latest legal action to take aim at a critic of the nation's Islamist leader.

The warrant against Bassem Youssef is also the latest in a series of legal actions against the comedian, who has come to be known as Egypt's Jon Stewart. Youssef's widely-watched weekly show, "ElBernameg" or The Program, has become a platform for lampooning the government, opposition, media and clerics.

The fast-paced show has attracted a wide viewership, but has also earned itself its fair share of detractors. Youssef has been a frequent target of lawsuits, most of them brought by Islamist lawyers who have accused him of "corrupting morals" or violating "religious principles."

The comedian has faced several court cases in the past, also accusing him of insulting President Mohammed Morsi. One of Youssef's attorneys, Gamal Eid, said this is the first time an arrest warrant has been issued for the comedian.

In a post on his official Twitter account, Youssef said he will hand himself in to the prosecutor's office Sunday. He then added, with his typical sarcasm: "Unless they kindly send a police van today and save me the transportation hassle."

Eid said the warrant fits into a widening campaign against government critics, media personalities, and activists.

"The prosecution has become a tool to go after the regime's opposition and intimidate it," Eid said.

A call to a top aide to the country's chief prosecutor, Hassan Yassin, for comment went unanswered.

Opposition figures have expressed concerns about freedom of expression and assembly for what they call a crackdown on dissent at a time of deep polarization in Egypt's politics.

The political standoff pits Morsi, a Brotherhood veteran, and his Islamist allies in one camp against a mostly secular and liberal opposition backed by moderate Muslims, minority Christians and a large segment of women in the other.

The opposition charges that Morsi and the Brotherhood have failed to tackle any of the nation's most pressing problems and are trying to monopolize power, and breaking promises of inclusiveness. Morsi blames the country's woes on nearly three decades of corruption under his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, and accuses the opposition of stoking unrest for political gain.

On Monday, Egypt's top state prosecutor, Talaat Abdullah, issued arrest warrants for five of Egypt's most prominent democracy advocates and activists over allegations that they instigated violence last week near the Brotherhood's headquarters in Cairo.

It was one of the worst bouts of violence in months, where nearly 200 people were injured in clashes between anti-government protesters and supporters of the Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails.

Morsi harshly criticized his opponents, calling them hired thugs out to derail Egypt's democracy. The Brotherhood also blamed privately-owned media for fanning the violence.

The criticism was followed by a two-day protest by dozens of Islamists outside the studios of TV networks critical of Morsi. The Islamist protesters pelted police and prevented some talk show hosts and guests from going in and out of the complex west of Cairo.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said the escalation of anti-press "rhetoric" by Morsi and his supporters and the sit-in outside the media city were "deeply troubling."

The series of prosecutions and arrest warrants come amid a legal challenge to the general prosecutor, whose appointment by Morsi last year was declared void by a court ruling earlier this week.

On Saturday, Egypt's chief prosecutor Talaat Abdullah said he will appeal the court ruling, saying it is "in violation of the constitution and the law," Egypt's state news agency reported. The decision signals a protracted legal battle is likely to ensue, further confusing the legal scene in Egypt.

Already some, including members of the journalist union, have declared they no longer recognize the legitimacy of the prosecutor's decision.

Also on Saturday, an Egyptian rights group said police detained 13 people, including five lawyers, and accused them of assaulting police in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city.

The arrests inside the police station mark a rare instance in which lawyers face potential criminal charges.

The Haqanya Center for Rights said the 13 are accused of insulting security officials, attempting to free other detainees held at the police station, and illegal assembly.

The arrests prompted an angry response from lawyers at Cairo's Bar Association, who demanded an apology from the police.

Mohammed Abdel-Aziz, an attorney, said the lawyers and activists were beaten and assaulted at the station, where they had been since Friday to represent three opposition members reportedly arrested by members of a political party affiliated with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood who handed them to the police.

8 Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

Think allergies end in April or May? Guess again.

Those sneezy, itchy-eyed, congested months can last well into late fall, as different trees, then grasses and, finally, weeds bombard the air with pollen. If that weren't irritating enough, outdoor mold starts to release airborne spores starting in summer and continuing through fall, which can cause further irritation. In fact, reactions to mold (fungi that thrive in warm, moist, humid climates both outdoors and in) as well as ragweed may be even more of a problem in certain parts of the country this summer because of heavier-than-usual rainfall.

If you're sneezing like crazy, don't just wait for a drop in the temperature to stamp out your allergy misery. Here's how to stay outside, active, and virtually symptom free?all allergy season long.

    6 Surprising Allergy Triggers

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

    Rethink Your Exercise Plan

You breathe harder and suck in more air when you're exercising than when you're, say, watching TV. The more air you inhale, the more airborne pollen and mold spores you suck in too. That's why it's important to take your workout indoors when your allergies are acting up or on days with very high pollen or mold counts. Check here for daily local levels.

Love walking or running outside? You don't have to give it up entirely, but try to minimize your exposure. To help ease symptoms, take a nondrowsy antihistamine before you exercise or plan to spend significant time outdoors. Pick a path that's less likely to expose you to allergens?walk on a school track, for example, instead of through your tree-lined neighborhood. And steer clear of major roads and highways. Chemical irritants from exhaust can worsen allergy symptoms, says Dr. Malcolm N. Blumenthal, director of the Asthma and Allergy Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

    Watch for Nonseasonal Allergies

The more allergens you're exposed to at a given time, the higher your allergenic load and the worse your symptoms.

If you're allergic to cats and dust mites in addition to pollen and mold, for example, visiting a cat-owning friend on a summer evening can make that load virtually unbearable. Here are some tips to help you limit your exposure to these top offenders:

Dust mites: Cover flooring with washable throw rugs instead of carpets, which, like blankets, down comforters, and curtains, are favorite mite habitats. Launder rugs, bed linens and curtains in hot water (more than 130?F) to kill mites. Dust often with a damp cloth. Get zippered, allergyproof covers for your mattress and pillows.

Dog and cat dander: If pet owners come to visit, be sure to vacuum couches or chairs they've used after they leave. Their clothes may carry their furry friends' dander, which can be deposited in your home and aggravate symptoms.

Indoor mold: Get a dehumidifier to dry out your basement, and use exhaust fans in other areas prone to dampness and mold, such as the kitchen and bathroom. Wash bath mats often, and keep houseplants to a minimum (mold loves potting soil).

Is The Air In Your Home Making You Sick?

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

Shun synthetic materials for natural ones like cotton?your nose and eyes will thank you. Who knew? When synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge that attracts pollen, which, as it turns out, is also electrically charged, says Dr. Gailen D. Marshall, director of clinical immunology and the division of allergy at the University of Mississippi. Natural fibers such as cotton also breathe better, so they stay drier and less hospitable to moisture-loving mold.

Toss just-washed clothes and bedding in the dryer?don't hang them outside on a clothing line. Avoid contacts when your eyes feel itchy, and feel free to splurge on a pair of jumbo sunglasses?they'll help shield your peepers from airborne irritants.

Make This Your Healthiest Spring Ever!

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

    Get Smart About Gardening

Got killer allergies? The best way to deal with yard work is to have someone else do it. Failing that... Take an antihistamine or cromolyn sodium about half an hour before you head outdoors, and wear a pollen mask whenever you dig around in dirt, rake leaves, or mow the lawn?activities is all but guaranteed to stir up pollen and mold. Keep your lawn cut short, so it's less likely to sprout pollen-producing flowers or weeds. If you have a compost heap?a major mold breeding ground?consider getting rid of it or moving it far away from the house.

Finally, consider replacing plants that produce lots of offending pollen with more benign varieties. Rules of green thumb: Choose showy, flowering trees and shrubs such as apple and cherry trees and azaleas; they produce waxy pollen that's too heavy to ride the breeze. On the lawn, opt for nonpollinating ground cover such as myrtle or ivy rather than grass.

    How To Allergy-Proof Your Backyard

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

    Give Yourself a Good Scrubbing

Showering more often may keep allergy invasions at bay.

While you're outside, pollen and mold spores can parachute onto your hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and skin. To give them the boot and minimize your exposure, do the following once you cross the threshold: Wash your hands, rinse your eyes, and shower (before bed, or right away if you've done yard work).

Same goes for your pet. Even if you're not allergic to your pup, he can become an allergy magnet after running around outdoors. Brush off his fur before you give him free reign of the house again.

Keep The Pet, Lose The Allergies

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

    Consider a Stronger Treatment

OTC meds like antihistamines and decongestants can significantly relieve symptoms, but if your nose is still running, it may be time for an upgrade.

If you've got a faucet for a nose and are constantly congested, ask your doctor about a steroid nasal spray, which relieves these symptoms better than an antihistamine, says Dr. David Shulan, FAAAI, vice president of Certified Allergy & Asthma Consultants, a practice in Albany, NY. The catch: You need to use it on a regular basis, and it can take up to 2 weeks to have an effect. A spritz every once in a while is useless, Shulan says.

If pollen, ragweed, or dust mites are your main problem, think about getting allergy shots (immunotherapy). Injections of very small, safe amounts of the chemicals you're allergic to will help your immune system become resistant to the allergens, so your body doesn't launch a full-out attack every time you inhale a pollen particle. You get shots once or twice a week for several months in gradually increasing doses, and periodic maintenance shots after that for 3 to 5 years.

"Not enough people who could benefit from allergy shots consider them," says Dr. John R. Cohn, chief of the adult allergy section at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University. "They may help if you don't respond to usual treatments because they reduce your sensitivity to allergens instead of only treating symptoms. I find that about 80% of patients see an 80 percent improvement." Unfortunately, the shots are not as effective for most mold allergies, said Shulan"

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

The wonder cup just got even more wonderful. Yep, heart-healthy, cancer-quashing green tea may battle allergies too.

Japanese researchers found that EGCG, the abundant antioxidant compound in green tea, may help stop your body from mounting an immune response to a wide range of allergens, including pollen, pet dander, and dust. Steeping two or three cups a day of green tea helps bolster the body's defenses, especially as you age, suggests Lester A. Mitscher, PhD, a professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Kansas and author of The Green Tea Book: China's Fountain of Youth.

    Ways to Outsmart Your Allergies

Weave yoga into your workout plan, and you can say namaste to your allergies.

"Stress promotes inflammation, which can heighten your body's allergic response," says Dr. Tina Sindwani, an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. You need to focus on marketing if you own a business. If your name is not out there, you will fail as a business. That is why you need to get into video marketing, as it puts you on the cutting edge of online marketing. Use the following video marketing tricks and tips.

Your video isn't ready just because your transcripts are written. Your content must always be engaging in the viewer's mind. If this is not possible, get some help.

Remember to use YouTube. You should begin your video marketing campaign here. For one thing, your video is hosted for free. Additionally, you will be on the 3rd most popular website in the known universe. It's also second place as far as search engines go, and so it's the most popular site for videos.

Do you get the same question repeatedly? You can then answer these questions. All you have to do is make a video to show how your products work.

If you do not want to create videos yourself, get others to do it for you. Ask your viewers to create a video and have everyone vote on it, giving the winner a great prize, along with getting their video shown. Let the people know that for the prize, you'll start using the video they made as a commercial.

It is a great idea to email your current customers a link to your video. This helps you keep in touch with your customers, gives them the latest news and reminds them to visit your website. Always link back to your website, allowing customers easy access to the site if they want more information or to buy something!

If your videos are about a product you sell, make sure to include a link in the video description. You can usually put the link right in the video player for easy access. Then the link stays with the video no matter where the video is shared or embedded.

Realize that making your marketing video is just the first part of your video marketing strategy. You are also responsible for promoting your own video to gain exposure. By promoting your videos, you can expect an increase in clickthroughs. Include nice content, but also ensure people know it is there.

People are always searching for "how-to" subjects online. When you make a video tutorial, people looking for information on that subject will find your video, resulting in a viewer base that reflects your niche market. After they realize you know what you are talking about, they will seek out more information from you.

Screenshots of your business website can be used in the video. This gives viewers a glimpse of how your website looks. How-to videos also could benefit from website screenshots. Take your screenshot, and use video software to include it in your video.

Hire the right people to ensure high quality video content. Team members can be anyone who has a working knowledge of your company. Credit them near the end so that they can see their names.

If your video marketing campaign does not give you great results, do not let yourself get discouraged. Listen to whatever feedback you get and make an effort to improve your videos. You'll get better at it. It just takes time.

Avoid ending your video with an answer, but ask your viewers a question instead. This will help engage your viewers by inviting them to comment. This will help spread your video when their comments are being placed on their feeds, as well as your own.

It is necessary to be real and honest in your videos. Hidden motivations within videos are never a good thing. If the purpose of the clip is to sell a new product, it should be obvious. Tell your viewers what to expect! Utilize your comments to develop relationships with those who view your videos. Develop a reputation as an expert for whatever niche you are in, and network with others in your field.

Optimizing your videos is very important. When you upload videos to more than one site, you should have unique titles and descriptions for every one. Don't forget about targeted keywords. Contact information can be included so that you can be easily contacted by customers for more information.

Once you have learned more about video marketing, you can start creating videos of your own. Don't just use these tips though. There is a lot more to learn when it comes to video marketing. Your marketing campaign will definitely be much more effective as you learn more.

Pope presides over trimmed Easter Vigil service

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis celebrated a trimmed back Easter Vigil service Saturday after having reached out to Muslims and women during a Holy Week in which he began to put his mark on the Catholic Church.

Francis processed into a darkened and silent St. Peter's Basilica at the start of the service, in which the faithful recall the period between Christ's crucifixion on Good Friday and resurrection on Easter Sunday.

One of the most dramatic moments of the Easter Vigil service that usually follows ? when the pope would share the light of his candle with others until the entire basilica twinkled ? was shortened this year as were some of the Old Testament readings.

The Vatican has said these provisions were in keeping with Francis' aim to not have his Masses go on too long. The Easter Vigil service under Benedict XVI frequently would typically run nearly three hours. The new pope has made clear he prefers his Masses short and to the point: he was even caught checking his watch during his March 19 installation ceremony.

A trimmed-back vigil ? and one that started earlier than usual ? was just one of the novelties of this Holy Week under an Argentine Jesuit pope who just two weeks ago stunned the world by emerging from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica after his election with a simple "Brothers and sisters, good evening."

He riled traditionalists but endeared himself to women and liberals by washing and kissing the feet of two young girls during a Holy Thursday Mass at a juvenile detention center in Rome, when the rite usually calls for only men to participate. A day later, Francis reached out with friendship to "Muslim brothers and sisters" during a Good Friday procession dedicated to the suffering of Christians from terrorism, war and religious fanaticism in the Middle East.

In his homily Saturday, Francis kept his message simple and tied to the liturgical readings, recalling how Jesus' disciples found his tomb empty a day after his death and were surprised and confused.

"Our daily problems and worries can wrap us up in ourselves, in sadness and bitterness, and that is where death is," he said. "Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life!"

He later baptized four men, part of the Easter Vigil ritual.

Just a few hours after the vigil ends, Francis on Sunday will celebrate Easter Mass and deliver his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "To the city and the world." Usually the pope also issues Easter greetings in dozens of languages.

In his two weeks as pope, Francis' discomfort with speaking in any language other than Italian has become apparent. He has even shied away from speaking Spanish when the occasion would call for it, though the Vatican has said he has done so to avoid discriminating against other languages by favoring his native tongue.

Italian is the lingua franca of the Vatican and Francis has emphasized his role as bishop of Rome over that of pope of the universal church, making his use of Italian logical.

It's not clear how Francis will handle the multilingual greetings Sunday.

Typically, after the busy Easter week ceremonies, the pope would go to the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo for a few days of vacation. Francis can't do that since the previous pope, Benedict XVI, is currently living there in retirement.

The Vatican has said Francis would stay put in the Vatican.

It's no magic: Invisibility cloak now available in a slim, form-fitting design

Previous success in hiding objects has relied on bulky cloaking materials. Now researchers have developed a thin, form-fitting cloak that makes objects invisible to microwave radiation.

    By Pete Spotts / March 27, 2013

In a feat of physics worthy of Star Trek's Romulans, researchers have for the first time used a form-fitting cloak to render an object invisible from any direction. Sorry, Harry Potter, this is not magic.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The experiment, conducted using microwave radiation, eventually could help pave the way for more-effective ways to hide military aircraft from radar, the researchers say. If extended to visible light, the approach could lead to novel biomedical applications, as well as tiny switches for optical computing.

The feat is the latest in a decade-long effort to develop an ability to hide objects from view. Other researchers have been able to hide objects at microwave, infrared, and even visible-light wavelengths, and in two and three dimensions. But the cloaking materials have been bulky.

Indeed, it's a desire that traces its roots to H.G. Wells' "Invisible Man," notes Andrea Alu, an assistant professor of engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the research team reporting the results this week in the New Journal of Physics.

"We see objects by collecting whatever they radiate," he says, referring to the light that materials reflect or scatter.

One approach to cloaking is to change the behavior of electromagnetic radiation ? radio or light, for instance ? in ways that send the radiation around the object, rather than scattering some of it back at the detector trying to "see" the object.

Cloaks to accomplish this generally have been made from so-called metamaterials ? materials engineered to display traits that aren't found in nature.

The team led by Jason Soric, in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, designed its cloaking system using metamaterials as well. But instead of trying to bend radiation around the object so that none is scattered back to an observer, the researchers opted to use a cloak to change the properties of the radiation itself in ways that would cancel out the radiation scattered from an object.

"The overall effect is transparency," says Dr. Alu.

To pull off the feat, the team relied on the wave-like properties of electromagnetic radiation. The team surrounded a seven-inch-long cylinder with an ultra-thin cloak made from a polycarbonate film. The film was criss-crossed with a fishnet-like mesh made from copper tape.

The mesh was designed to scatter the same amount of microwave radiation as the cylinder. But the wavelike peaks and valleys in the microwave radiation from the two sources were offset, so that the peaks in the cylinder's scattered radiation overlapped with the valleys in the mesh's scattered radiation, canceling each other out.

The combined effect rendered the cylinder invisible to microwaves from any direction. Any microwave shadow the object might have cast vanished as well, as though the microwave radiation went right through the cylinder unimpeded.

The loss of a shadow could have some useful applications in telecommunications, where large antennas are placed close together. Such "antenna farms" often sprout on the tops of tall buildings, where one antenna can block signals from another in a specific direction. By cloaking the offending blocker, other signals would pass on by, eliminating the dead zone that was once the shadow.

Because the cloak is thin and pliable, it may be possible to cloak a variety of odd shapes, the researchers say.

A key reason the researcher chose to use microwaves for their experiment, rather than visible light, is that cloaking with light works best when the object you're trying to hide is on the size scale roughly comparable to the wavelength of light ? several hundred billionths of a meter. In principle the approach could work in visible light with tiny objects on scales of mere millionths of a meter, the team suggests.

Working with microwaves involves the same physics. But its longer wavelength allows experimenters to work with easy-to-handle objects.

(AP Photo/Lee Jin-man)

(AP) ? North Korea issued its latest belligerent threat Saturday, saying it has entered "a state of war" with South Korea a day after its young leader threatened the United States because two American B-2 bombers flew a training mission in South Korea.

Analysts say a full-scale conflict is extremely unlikely and North Korea's threats are instead aimed at drawing Washington into talks that could result in aid and boosting leader Kim Jong Un's image at home. But the harsh rhetoric from North Korea and rising animosity from the rivals that have followed U.N. sanctions over Pyongyang's Feb. 12 nuclear test have raised worries of a misjudgment leading to a clash.

In a joint statement by the government, political parties and organizations, North Korea said Saturday that it will deal with all matters involving South Korea according to "wartime regulations." It also warned it will retaliate against any provocations by the United States and South Korea without "any prior notice."

The divided Korean Peninsula is already in a technical state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a cease-fire, not a peace treaty. But Pyongyang said it was scrapping the war armistice earlier this month.

South Korea's Unification Ministry released a statement saying the latest threat wasn't new and was just a follow-up to Kim's earlier order to put troops on a high alert in response to annual U.S-South Korean military drills. Pyongyang sees those drills as rehearsals for an invasion; the allies call them routine and defensive.

In an indication North Korea is not immediately considering starting a war, officials in Seoul said South Korean workers continued Saturday to cross the border to their jobs at a joint factory park in North Korea that's funded by South Koreans

On Friday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned his forces were ready "to settle accounts with the U.S." after two nuclear-capable U.S. B-2 bombers dropped dummy munitions on a South Korean island range as part of joint drills and returned to its base in Missouri.

North Korean state media later released a photo of Kim and his senior generals huddled in front of a map showing routes for envisioned strikes against cities on both American coasts. The map bore the title "U.S. Mainland Strike Plan."

At the main square in Pyongyang, tens of thousands of North Koreans turned out for a 90-minute mass rally in support of Kim's call to arms. Small North Korean warships, including patrol boats, conducted maritime drills off both coasts of North Korea near the border with South Korea earlier this week, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said in a briefing Friday. He didn't provide details.

The spokesman said that South Korea's military was mindful of the possibility that North Korean drills could lead to an actual provocation. He said that the South Korean and U.S. militaries are watching closely for any signs of missile launch preparations in North Korea. He didn't elaborate.

Experts believe North Korea is years away from developing nuclear-tipped missiles that could strike the United States. Many say they've also seen no evidence that Pyongyang has long-range missiles that can hit the U.S. mainland.

Still, there are fears of a localized conflict, such as a naval skirmish in disputed Yellow Sea waters. Such naval clashes have happened three times since 1999. There's also danger that such a clash could escalate. Seoul has vowed to hit back hard the next time it is attacked.

"The first strike of the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK will blow up the U.S. bases for aggression in its mainland and in the Pacific operational theatres including Hawaii and Guam," the North said Saturday in the statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

Pyongyang uses the U.S. nuclear arsenal as a justification for its own push for nuclear weapons. It says that U.S. nuclear firepower is a threat to its existence.

OUYA game console ships with over 100 available games | Android ...

We had known the OUYA game console was set to begin shipping to Kickstarter backers on March 28. And well, that seems to has begun without any delays. The OUYA team shared the news on their company blog in a post titled Shippin? ? the interesting part here, they begin with a thank you. You see, they are thanking the backers for well, backing them and making the console a success.

    ouya_console-580x4131-540x38411

Or maybe more accurately, a success to date. You see, there is still the non-internet crowd that they will need to please. We are not going to see how well that turns out until June 4 when the console makes its way into retail outlets. The good news for now though, the OUYA team managed to drive enough buzz and enough hype to convince developers that it will be worth their time to bring games to the console.

According to details coming from OUYA, they were able to launch the console with 100 plus games. As of last evening they were claiming 104, but that number may have already grown. Regardless of the specific amount, some of the game titles new OUYA users can look forward to playing include one called Save the Puppies as well as Final Fantasy III, Beast Boxing Turbo, Stalagflight and Knightmare Tower.

Time will tell which, and how many additional games will follow. OUYA has also said they signed up over eight thousand developers. The eight thousand developer count makes it seem like additional games are a given, however looking at this from the other side brings us to wonder why eight thousand developers and only 104 games.

Be Aware as You Prepare to Sell Your Home - RealEstate.com

Declutter, clean, paint, mow, plant, refinish, replace and renew; all words commonly found in blogs, magazine articles and books advising you how best to prepare your home for a quick sale at top dollar. You can do 99 percent of the right stuff to make your house look stellar, but if you let 1 percent of the wrong stuff slip through the cracks, it may be that one tiny thing that kills a potential offer. Worse yet, negative ?reviews? of your house can be exaggerated and widely spread through your neighborhood and the real estate community, possibly scaring away the perfect buyer.

A Rose by Any Other Name?

Make sure your house is clean before putting it on the marketWhat types of things might be on that 1 percent list? One of my employees searching for a small fixer-upper second home in Arizona came across many unthinkable situations in average homes. Smells were a big one ? from dogs, cats and dirt ? but the worst house had a combination of all three along with an eye-stinging smell of urine. They held their noses and couldn?t get outside quickly enough. It was a large house in a good neighborhood, and probably fixable at the right price, but they couldn?t stay in the house long enough to evaluate it, even after making a repeat visit.

    Let Sleeping Things Lie

No, please don?t. Just because your teenager likes to sleep until early afternoon, please don?t invite potential buyers into your house until you have done a complete sweep for animals and kids hiding under the covers. It just so happened that my employee and her real estate agent were unpleasantly surprised more than once by occupants stirring from their sleep in a back bedroom.

    Lights Out

Another big no-no. Drapes drawn, unlit lamps and light switches in the ?off? position can give the impression that a stakeout is in progress. There is good reason on a hot summer afternoon to have shades drawn and lights low to keep things cool, but if you are trying to sell your house, you need to keep things turned on and opened up in order to highlight the best features of each room. Incandescent lamp lighting is most flattering to the human complexion, so if you truly want buyers to say they can ?see? themselves living there, then help them to see themselves at their best in ?their? home.

Leave lights on when selling your home Picture via cotedetexas.blogspot.com

Pictures ARE Worth a Thousand Words

Don't take pictures of your home, or show it to buyers, when it's messyBefore any buyer even thinks of stepping into your listed house, he or she has seen many pictures of it before asking to see the real thing. Don?t reduce your odds of a showing by displaying unflattering pictures of your fantastic home. You don?t need to hire a professional photographer or buy a fancy new camera just to market your home. Do take clear, well-lit and composed (aka staged or styled) pictures of the best parts of the house.

Leave kids, animals, paper piles, open cupboards, and your bathroom toiletries out of the pictures.?Your house can be beautifully staged, but if the pictures on the real estate websites don?t get your ?customer? in the door, then your staging dollars and efforts will not even get one chance to pay off. Tell your buyers with pictures what you can?t tell them with words.

    One Bad Apple ?

Can spoil the whole bunch. Remove the bad apples and polish up the good ones. Homebuyers are savvier than you may think. Even though you have never met them, you are preparing your home to become theirs, and you only get one shot at it. Don?t spoil their first or last impression.

CUNY Transfers and New Facilities Drive Access and Expand ...

Transfer students are streaming into the University?s four-year baccalaureate colleges at unprecedented rates ? expanding diversity as a CUNY redefined by a decade of improved academics, record-breaking enrollments and $1.8 billion in campus facility upgrades is increasing access to a high-value education as never before.

The upward transfer trend, evident among all major racial and ethnic groups ? Asians, blacks, Hispanics and whites ? has enhanced racial diversity at the 11 senior colleges, where transfers increased from 15,423 in 2001-2002 to 24,056 in 2011-2012.

The trend not only spotlights an increasingly well-trod path of access to CUNY?s baccalaureate programs, but robust mobility within its more tightly integrated system of colleges. A majority ? 62 percent ? of the transfers came from within the University, and almost all of the within-CUNY transfers, 87 percent, moved from a less-selective college to a more selective one, according to the Office of Institutional Research.
Broken down by race, the 10-year transfer trend is a significant factor in expanding CUNY?s diversity ? already a given with the overwhelming number of freshmen entering from New York City?s diverse public and private high school systems.
From 2001-2002 to 2011-2012, Asian transfer enrollment in the four-year colleges went up from 2,230 to 4,593 or 19.1 percent of the transfer enrollment; black transfer enrollment increased from 4,473 to 5,879, or 24.4 percent; Hispanic transfers climbed from 3,151 to 5,651 or 23.5 percent of baccalaureate transfer enrollment, and white transfer numbers went up from 5,539 to 7,884 or 32.8 percent.

These trends, along with a decade of improving one-year retention rates among black and Hispanic full-time freshmen in the baccalaureate programs, have contributed to steady increases in black and Hispanic baccalaureate enrollment. This diverse profile is likely to remain stable for the foreseeable future, based on the improving retention rates, rising graduation rates at the CUNY-feeding New York City public schools, and the upward transfer trend.

CUNY is one of the most diverse public university systems in the country ? with black, Hispanic and white students each representing more than a quarter of all undergraduates, and Asians 18 percent ? according to fall 2011 figures. In fact, the University has the highest percentage of blacks enrolled in senior colleges, the second-highest percentage of Asians and the third highest percentage of Hispanics when compared with the six other largest and most diverse public systems, including the State University of New York and systems in California, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey and Texas, according to the National Center for Education Statistics? Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Students hail from 208 countries of origin, 58 percent of undergraduates are female, and 28 percent of students are 25 or older.

The University?s community college enrollment has also increased among all racial groups from fall 2001 to fall 2011, according to University figures. The surge been fueled in part by transfer students, whose enrollment rose from 11,293 in 2001-2002 to 14,713 in 2011-2012, a trend reflected among all racial/ethnic groups.

Freshman enrollment also rose substantially at the community colleges ? from 24,217 in 2001-2002 to 34,340 in 2011-2012 ? and took place among all racial groups except for white students, whose freshman numbers have essentially remained stable.

Graduation rates at the University for students of all races have increased dramatically in recent years. The six-year graduation rate for Asian and white students increased 13.8 percentage points between the freshman cohorts of 1995 and 2005, while the graduation rate for black and Hispanic students went up more ? by 14.4 percentage points. Between 2001 and 2011, the number of bachelor?s degrees earned by black students rose 16.3 percent, from 4,055 to 4,714. The number earned by Hispanic students sharply increased by 48.2 percent, from 2,727 to 4,042.

Driven primarily by rising graduation rates in the city?s public high schools, overall undergraduate enrollment at has grown substantially, by 70,000 students, over the past decade. It crested to more than 272,000 ? approximately 105,000 in associate programs and some 114,000 pursuing baccalaureate degrees ? during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The surging demand for classroom seats has been fed by the strengthening of academic standards in the senior colleges, including establishment of The Macaulay Honors College at CUNY and other college-based honors programs ? and the creation of stronger college-
readiness programs in the community colleges including the just-opened, model New Community College at CUNY and the graduation-rate-boosting Accelerated Study in Associate Programs, or ASAP.

The University?s Invest in CUNY campaign has raised $2.3 billion since 2004 to fund initiatives such as student scholarships, and CUNY is now in the
midst of an extensive capital construction program, with $1.8 billion spent so far to expand student capacity at college campuses across the five boroughs.

Antiquated facilities have been upgraded and new buildings housing 21st century classrooms, laboratories, libraries and meeting spaces have been constructed, transforming the CUNY student experience and fueling the city?s economy with steady construction jobs in the process.

Senior, comprehensive and community colleges have all seen significant, value-enhancing facilities improvements. John Jay College of Criminal Justice has a new, $650 million campus on Manhattan?s West Side and has now joined Baruch, Brooklyn, City, Hunter, Queens, Lehman and the
College of Staten Island, in Macaulay Honors College.

Other upgrades at comprehensive and community colleges that have been completed or are underway include Medgar Evers College?s new, $235 million academic building, a $31 million Academic Village at Kingsborough Community College and a new $77 million building at Lehman College showcasing its strength in plant-science education.

At City Tech, a $406 million academic building to address the college?s acute space shortage is under way; at the College of Staten Island, a $200 million interdisciplinary high-performance computational center is in the pipeline, and there are design funds for a $120 million academic village/conference center at York College to house class and conference rooms, a bookstore, student government, clubs and lounges.

This past fall a new library opened at Bronx Community College; Borough of Manhattan Community College?s Fiterman Hall, rebuilt after its destruction on 9/11, opened for classes; and the CUNY Law School moved to a new, modern facility in Long Island City.

CUNY?s integrated system of 24 colleges and schools encompasses 11 senior and comprehensive, and seven community colleges. The new CUNY is expanding academic access and entry points, and upgraded facilities, at all institutional levels ? raising the overall quality of the system while attracting new students to an array of educational opportunities.

Opportunities are also expanding as a result of the University?s increased commitment to adult and continuing education, English-language immersion and GED classes. On-line degree programs coordinated through the School for Professional Studies are also creating new options for returning adults and students in the workforce seeking training and advanced education.

The University has also broadened its educational outreach over the last dozen years through satellite educational centers in city neighborhoods infused with immigrants seeking credit and noncredit courses.

These new points of access include CUNY in the Heights, which recently expanded its program in Washington Heights/Inwood, operated by Hostos Community College and BMCC; CUNY on the Concourse, on Fordham Road in the Bronx, a collaboration with the Local 1199 health care workers? union and run by Lehman, Hostos and BCC; the CUNY Higher Education Center in Flushing, operated by Queensborough Community College; and the new CUNY School of Public Health and Hunter College?s Silberman School of Social Work in East Harlem.
In addition, the University hosts either on campus or nearby more than 20 campus and early college high schools, many offering associate degrees in close collaboration with faculty and teachers from the New York City Department of Education. CUNY?s College Now program partnerships now serve over 20,000 high school students annually, providing free remedial and Advanced Placement courses and seminars at more than 400 public high schools. This is part of CUNY?s long-term commitment to maintain and enhance the student pipeline of college readiness.

'Room 237' will explore the lasting impact of and fans' theories about 'The Shining'

'Room 237' explores the making of 'The Shining' while exploring its lasting legacy. 'Room 237' will also include contemporary debates about themes and hidden meanings in the movie.

    By Daniel Johnson,?Screen Rant / March 29, 2013

Stanley Kubrick?s The Shining may have received polarized reactions upon its 1980 release, but the film is widely considered a horror classic today thanks to a terrifyingly manic performance from Jack Nicholson, an immensely haunting setting and disturbing surrealistic imagery. The film has undoubtedly left a lasting nightmarish impact on viewers, as evidenced by the tagline for the upcoming documentary on the making of the film: ?Some movies stay with you forever?and ever?and ever.?

Screen Rant had a humble start back in 2003 as a place to rant about some of the dumber stuff related to the movie industry. Since then, the site has grown to cover more and more TV and movie news (and not just the dumb stuff) along with sometimes controversial movie reviews. The goal at Screen Rant is to cover stories and review movies from a middle ground/average person perspective.

The documentary, titled Room 237, takes fans of Kubrick?s adaptation of the famous Stephen King bestseller behind the scenes, exploring how the film was crafted while examining its subtext. This week, we are getting a look at the?debut trailer for Room 237, which you can check out above.?

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn?t give us a peek at never-before seen footage from behind the scenes of The Shining,?but it does create a similar tone and mood that the film did. The very simple trailer builds excitement for the niche audience by scrolling quotes about the film?s cultural significance and its ambiguous nature, while re-creating one of the most memorable images from the film.

The trailer promises the documentary will tackle some of the symbolism and hidden meanings of the film that are still heavily debated today, including literary allusions to fairy tales and the argument that the film is a larger metaphor for the genocide of Native Americans.

Here?s the official synopsis for Room 237:

After the box office failure of ?Barry Lyndon,? Stanley Kubrick?decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. ?The Shining,? Stephen King?s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick?s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film?s release, a considerable cult of ?Shining? devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film?s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher?s wry and provocative ?Room 237? fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick?s still-controversial classic.

Like many of Kubrick?s films, The Shining?was not immediately?embraced by audiences or critics. Rather, the film slowly built a cult following that helped transform it into an accepted classic years later. Many members of its following became obsessed with what they perceived to be underlying themes in the film, creating intriguing discussion and informative essays ? many of which contained what some may call radical, outside-thinking perspectives.

It?ll be interesting to see how the documentary unravels and explores many fans? interpretations of The Shining and why it still resonates with horror aficionados more than 30 years after its theatrical release. It may not touch on much of Kubrick?s intensity as visionary auteur or the relationships between cast and crew, but its ambitious approach to the subject and the layers beneath one of our favorite horror movies definitely has us intrigued.
