No. 5 Christopher Newport volleyball advances past Massachusetts-Boston in NCAA Division III quarterfinal

The fifth-ranked Christopher Newport (Va.) volleyball team overcame a slow start to win its NCAA Division III quarterfinal at Hope College in four games on Thursday.

The Captains beat unranked Massacusetts-Boston 22-25, 25-9, 25-17, 25-18 to reach Friday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Cory Harris led Christopher Newport (40-2) to its 32nd consecutive win by recording a match-high 16 kills to only four hitting errors.

The Captains hit .299 as a team to Boston's .076.

Christie Fellows and Bailey Jensen added 13 and 12 kills, respectively, for Christopher Newport.

"We didn't serve very well at the beginning (of the match). We also didn't pass very well," Captains coach Lindsay Birch said. "But we progressed as the match went on. We didn't freak out about it."

Kirsten Morrison's 10 kills topped Boston (20-12).

"We started out pretty well. The first game we played well. We lost our composure for two games. In the fourth game we started coming back," UMass-Boston coach Terry Condon said.

The Beacons played the entire season without a home match as their gym is being renovated.

Christopher Newport, the 2011 national runner-up, began the season ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history.

Latin American economy seen slowing in 2012

CADIZ, Spain (AP) ? A report by two international organizations says economic growth in Latin America will ease from 4.4 percent in 2011 to 3.2 percent in 2012, the first slowdown in nearly a decade.

But the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said the region's economy would accelerate again by 4 percent in 2013.

The organizations said Latin America's outlook remains relatively positive, but is exposed to uncertainty in the global economy. They urged governments to strengthen growth and counter risks.

The report was released Friday in this southern Spanish city on the first day of the Iberoamerican summit that brings Latin American leaders together with those of Spain and Portugal, two countries badly hit by the economic crisis.

Time for a Rolling Jubilee: Debt Relief By and For the People

Rolling Jubilee is a Strike Debt project that buys debt for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, abolishes it. Together we can liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will, and collective refusal. Debt resistance is just the beginning. Join us as we imagine and create a new world based on the common good, not Wall Street profits.? rollingjubilee.org??

The statistics on personal debt in the country are pretty sobering- 77.5% of American households are in debt; tuition debt has now exceeded credit card debt; and 1 in every 4 Americans is being pursued by a debt collector. 40% of indebted households used credit cards to pay for basic expenses.

These statistics reflect wage stagnation over a period of decades, the prohibitive costs of a college education, the lack of jobs and access to quality affordable health insurance. The right prefers the simpler argument that they reflect a lack of moral grounding in hard work and individual responsibility. That argument was rejected in the recent election. It remains to be seen whether national policies reject austerity as our fiscal course of action.

Strike Debt, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement, is not waiting around for a national policy sea-change. Rolling Jubilee, a Strike Debt project, is undertaking a ?bailout of the people, by the people.?

Banks sell debt for pennies on the dollar on a shadowy speculative market of debt buyers who then turn around and try to collect the full amount from debtors. The Rolling Jubilee intervenes by buying debt, keeping it out of the hands of collectors, and then abolishing it. We?re going into this market not to make a profit but to help each other out and highlight how the predatory debt system affects our families and communities. Think of it as a bailout of the 99% by the 99%.

At this point, Rolling Jubilee is buying up medical debt- 62% of all bankruptcies are caused by medical illness. Student debt has restrictions on bankruptcy, so it is not a focus at the moment. In an interesting victory for people over corporations, this debt forgiveness meets the IRS standards as a gift. If a corporate entity forgives the debt, the debtor would have to pay income tax on the forgiven amount.

The group has already raised $129,000 in funds which is enough to buy close to 2.5 million dollars in defaulted loans. The amount of the personal debt in the country is staggering. Increases in student loans alone since 2010 totaled $914 billion in the April-June quarter this year.

Will Rolling Jubilee roll into San Diego? We have the opportunity to participate in a movement to ?liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will, and collective refusal.?

What is the Rolling Jubilee?

Mozilla Launches Experimental Browser-Based Simulator For Firefox OS

firefox-phoneMozilla's Firefox OS (also known as Boot to Gecko), a mobile operating system that focuses on web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript, is quickly moving through its development stages. While it's already possible to install Firefox OS on many phones, the Firefox OS team today launched its Firefox OS Simulator. The simulator, which is still considered "experimental," is basically a Firefox add-on that should run on Windows, Mac and Linux (though there are currently some known issues with Linux and Windows XP).

Fiscal cliff worries small business owners - Colorado Springs ...

Share this story:

Small business owners are worried about the so0called ?fiscal cliff? and they don?t want any potential solution to interfere with job creation.

The looming questions over whether Congress will act before the year-end deadlines has small business owners trying to plan for varied scenarios.

In Colorado Springs, 80 people attended a recent seminar ?The Fiscal Cliff? hosted by accountants from Stockman Kast Ryan + Co. Eric Ryan, tax partner, said that before the Nov. 6 election, 20 people had signed up for the seminar. The day after the election, 80 people had signed up.

?I took that to mean there was a lot of optimism,? he said jokingly. The majority of the attendees were small business owners hoping to glean some information that would help them.

Accountants Marilue Beverly and Chris Scovil explained the fiscal cliff and why it matters. The pair gave their best predictions on the Congressional and presidential appetite to make changes to individual pieces of the tax code. However, both said this is a difficult planning season because of the uncertainty.

Nationally, a poll released this week shows nearly eight in 10 small business owners are aware of the fiscal cliff, a series of tax increases and billions of dollars in automatic spending cuts that will take effect on Jan. 1 if Congress and the president can?t agree on a plan to reduce the deficit by year?s end.

A majority of the surveyed entrepreneurs think it?s more important for Congress to focus on creating jobs than reducing the deficit. However, entrepreneurs see eliminating tax cuts that only benefit the wealthiest as one part of a potential solution.

By nearly a 2-to-1 ratio, small business owners believe spending cuts for education, health care and infrastructure would hurt the economy more than a tax increase on the top 2 percent. A majority also believe allowing tax cuts for high-income earners to expire is the right thing to do given the current economic situation, according to results of a national telephone poll of 500 small business owners conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research for Small Business Majority.

?Our economy is slowly recovering,? said John Arensmeyer, founder & CEO of Small Business Majority. ?Allowing the tax increases and drastic spending cuts that going over the fiscal cliff would trigger would cripple our small businesses and middle class, and with them our fragile recovery.?

Lawmakers need to act now, Arensmeyer said, and give small employers a sense of certainty about what they can expect during 2013.

The poll found more than three-quarters of small business owners are concerned about an increase in the employee portion of payroll taxes, which saves a typical household $1,000 a year, and could lead to decreased disposable income and demand from customers.

It is estimated that if this 2 percent tax cut is allowed to expire, it could cost nearly 1 million jobs and almost a percentage point of economic output in 2013.

Additional findings include:

  • 65 percent are concerned about $500 billion in defense cuts that would occur over the next 10 years
  • 77 percent are worried about infrastructure cuts
  • ?Six in 10 are worried about funding reductions for the small business loan and counseling programs under the Small Business Administration
  • Nearly seven in 10 are concerned about funding cuts for government contracts small businesses can bid on
  • 81 percent are concerned about an eightfold increase in the number of households facing the Alternative Minimum Tax? a tax some people have to pay instead of a lower income tax to ensure they pay a minimum amount of taxes?increasing from 4.4 million to 32.9 million households, or by about $2,800 per family. Fifty-three percent are very concerned.

This press release is available in German.

Researchers from Jena and Greifswald used GPS satellites for a long-term behavioral monitoring of land crab migration on Christmas Island. In cooperation with colleagues from the Zoological Institute at the University of Greifswald, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany, used a GPS-based telemetric system to analyze movements of freely roaming robber crabs, which is the first large-scale study of any arthropod using GPS technology to monitor behavior.

This analysis focussed on the coconut crab Birgus latro, a terrestrial crustacean living on tropical islands in the Indo-Pacific. Weighing up to 4 kg, Birgus latro, also called the giant robber crab, is the world's largest land-living arthropod. Its lifespan can reach 60 years. The study was carried out on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean which has a largely undisturbed population of about several hundreds of thousands coconut crabs

Between 2008 and 2011, 55 male robber crabs were equipped with GPS tags which successfully recorded more than 1,500 crab days of activity and followed some individual animals for as long as three months. Besides site fidelity with short-distance excursions, the data revealed long-distance movements between the coast and the inland rainforest. These movements are likely related to mating, saltwater drinking and foraging.

The tracking patterns indicate path following as a main navigation strategy. Furthermore, translocation experiments showed that robber crabs are capable of homing over large distances. The search behavior induced in these experiments suggests path integration to be another important navigation strategy.

The GPS tags were custom-made by e-obs GmbH (digital telemetry) in Munich in a limited-lot production. The devices can be programmed in such a way that they record GPS positions at intervals of one hour over a period of several months. The tag also contains an accelerometer to record movements in different (x, y, or z) directions and thus the activity of the crabs. Recorded data were downloaded by the scientists once a week via a radio link within a range of about 200 meters, so that the crabs were not disturbed. The devices send out radio impulses (pingers) in order to enable localization of the crabs via wireless connection using a high-sensitivity directional antenna. Similar devices were recently used in a study to monitor bird migration. The development of further miniaturized electronic devices and batteries should help to establish this method successfully for the study of even smaller animal species in the future.

REAL ESTATE: FTC outreach to Spanish speakers : Real Estate

Posted on | November 13, 2012 | Comments

The Federal Trade Commission has begun a refund process for Spanish-speaking consumers who have been harmed by mortgage foreclosure ?rescue? schemes.

This week, the FTC mailed claim forms to consumers who paid Dinamica Financier or Soluciones Dinamicas, Valentin Benitez or Jose Mario Esquer for home loan modification or foreclosure rescue services that were not rendered.

The claim forms are to be returned to the FTC no later than Jan. 14, 2013.

Under the judgment obtained in November 2010 as a result of a federal investigation into Dinamica-related business practices, the companies and defendants are banned from selling mortgage loan modification or foreclosure relief services.

Past customers who have not gotten a claim form, can visit www.FTC.gov/refunds to obtain one.

2000 gold by 1st quarter of 2013, says chief of top Asian exchange

$40 silver also coming, says Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society head

Hong Kong's Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society is in initial talks with Chinese officials to set up a bonded warehouse on the mainland in a bid to boost business with exchanges and traders there, its president said Tuesday.

The CGSE is a leading physical gold marketplace in Asia. President Haywood Cheung said the CGSE was seeking to set up a warehouse for gold and silver in Qianhai, a new financial zone in the southern city of Shenzhen.

"We are definitely interested in setting up warehouses in the mainland," Cheung told Reuters.

"Officials for Qianhai have said that initially this can be considered and is a good idea," he added. ...

Asked about his outlook for precious metals, Cheung said he expects spot gold prices to rise to $2,000 an ounce in the first quarter of next year, an increase from current prices of about $1,700-$1,800 an ounce.

Cheung also expects silver prices to rise to around $40 an ounce in the first quarter of next year, from about $32 an ounce currently.

Emotion Is Reversed in the Brains of Left Handers [Science]

Psychologists have always assumed that the way emotions are organized in the brain is the same for all of us. But now, a new study suggests that left-handers process emotion in the opposite side of the brain to right-handers—which could change the way we think about and treat mental disorders. More »

'Saturday Night Live' Will Have 'Some' Cast Changes

'I'd like everyone to stay,' Lorne Michaels says, addressing rumors that Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis are leaving the show.

Last month, there were rumors that "Saturday Night Live" standouts Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis might not be back for another season of the late-night staple. Wiig teased her possible exit in an interview with Alec Baldwin, while Samberg and Sudeikis have remained tight-lipped on their rumored departures.

On Wednesday, during a conference call about this weekend's Eli Manning/ Rihanna episode, the show's boss, Lorne Michaels, confirmed there would be some cast shakeups next season but didn't specify how they would take shape.

"I'm not really certain myself," he told reporters when asked whether there would be any exits. "I know there will be some, but it's just sort of the nature of the way we work that no one kind of talks about it until the season's done. Needless to say, I'd like everyone to stay. Did that avoid that question successfully?"

While he didn't want to fully commit to commenting on the future of the three actors on "SNL," he did share that fresh meat would be brought in to liven up the cast for next season. "Every summer, we go out and make the rounds of Chicago and L.A. and New York and various other places where people do this kind of work, and invariably that leads to somebody joining [the cast]," he teased. "The show has always been about bringing new people in."

With the season nearing an end, fans might not have to wait much longer to find out who will stay and who will go. But before any announcements are made, it seems the show has plans for this season to wrap with a bang. Per the show's Twitter page, Will Ferrell and Usher will be on hand for the May 11 episode and Mick "Moves Like" Jagger will pull double-duty on the May 19 season finale.

Who do you hope sticks around for another season? Let us know in the comments!

New 'Amazing Spider-Man' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

We take a closer look at the latest action-packed sneak peek.
By Kara Warner

Holy web-slingers, Spidey fans: Another trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man" has arrived!

While there are several familiar scenes from the first two epic teasers weaved into this exciting new two-and-a-half minutes, director Marc Webb has introduced a bunch of intriguing new elements into the new footage.

Here are five key scenes from the latest trailer:

Lonely Boy
Webb told us previously that the fact that Peter Parker is an orphan will play heavily into the story of this film, which is very much exemplified by the multiple "lonely boy" shots of Parker standing atop various buildings or walking by himself through the city streets with a forlorn look on his face. Not to mention Andrew Garfield's voice-over: "This life is not an easy one. I've made enemies, powerful enemies. I've put people I love in danger, but the one thing that has haunted me my entire life is finding the truth about my parents ... "

"I think there's a real emotional consequence to someone who's left by their parents when they're 7 or 8 years old," Webb has said. "And that contributes to sort of this trickster, chip-on-his-shoulder attitude."

Other Mischief May Come
Speaking of Parker's trickster side, we get another glimpse of his comedic and sarcastic sensibilities during his encounter with a carjacker, as shown in the previous trailer. What's new and fun this time around is Parker taunting the guy: "You found my weakness!" Parker says to the carjacker sarcastically. "It's small knives!"

The other intriguing and very possibly mischievous element in play here is the quick shot we see of Parker looking up at the impossibly tall and menacing Oscorp skyscraper. Yes, we know Parker is interested in the building because of its ties to his father and that Oscorp ID card he holds onto, but we can't help but feel a little bit of foreshadowing is at play in knowing what plays out with one Norman Osborn.

Lizard in a Lab Coat
Behold, the recently transformed, very dangerous-looking Lizard crumpled on the floor and bursting out of his lab coat — or the lab coat of his former self, Dr. Curt Connors (played by Rhys Ifans). We've seen some very quick shots of the film's central villain before, but this trailer offers us multiple glimpses at the before-and-after of Dr. Connors. And he is not at all a nice guy in his hulking green lizardy form ("Avengers" pun un-intended). We see the Lizard hurling innocent people around and later in heated pursuit of our heroic web-slinger.

Mystery Man With Intel
Speaking of the pre-reptilian Dr. Connors, there is a very brief, but intriguing interrogation-like scene in the trailer between Connors and an unidentified older gentleman. The gentleman looks to have long-ish white hair and is shown in a sort of shadowy silhouette asking the good doctor a very pointed question about Peter Parker and his parents. "Did you tell the boy about his father?" he says to Connors. We don't get to hear the Doc's response during this brief exchange, but the worried-but-stubborn look on Connors' face says the man is definitely withholding some key information that will undoubtedly prove to be of major importance to Parker down the line.

Action, Action and More Action
And just like all great superheroic trailers before it, Webb spends the last minute or so of his new trailer impressing us with tons of action. We see Parker-as-Spider-Man's extraordinary athleticism in some scenes of good old-fashioned chasery: He dodges police officers, carjackers and the Lizard, not to mention one impressive feat wherein he appears to be holding a burning car from plunging into a river — which, by the way, totally reminds us of a scene from Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man," whether that was intended or not; we'll have to see the finished film to decide. There is also more demonstration of Spidey's fancy web-slingers as he masters his skills with swinging from building to building and stealthily sliding into rooms upside down.

Check out everything we've got on "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Santigold Says Earl Sweatshirt Collabo 'Will Be Done Soon'

Though she's just released her Master of My Make-Believe album, Santi's already prepping a new track with the Odd Future member.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Uptin Saiidi

On her just-released Master of My Make-Believe album, Santigold strives to reinvent (or reinterpret) reality ... which, as you might expect, was a challenge, to say the very least.

"It's about accepting that your fantasy is actually your reality, and trusting your imagination, and trusting that your imagination is actually a real sense of knowing," she told MTV News. "It was about navigating through my mind, my emotions, and realizing I was in control. I had to trust my vision and my creativity and really own the art I was making ... I had to grow into accepting that. It took a tremendous amount of trust in myself."

And while she spent much of the past year working under conditions both real and surreal, Santi also found time to collaborate with (finally free) Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt on a new track. But since the collaboration was revealed via Twitter back in February, there's been no updates on just when fans would be able to hear the track. So, when Santi stopped by the MTV Newsroom earlier this week, we asked her for the latest ... and just how the unlikely team-up happened in the first place.

"I saw a tweet. I guess somebody re-tweeted that Earl said 'I like Santigold, would love to do something.' And I was like, 'OK!' " she laughed. "I mean, he's so cool, he's such a cute, awesome dude. And they were at Coachella, and they were the first ones up onstage — we invite people up onstage [during her performance] — and they came and did some major booty-shaking moves. And a couple of them came to our MOCA show in LA. We did this event that Mike D curated ... and they came there and caught the show."

So, when can we hear it? Well, with a new album out, Santigold's plate is pretty full right now, though she swears she's going to get the track out as soon as she finds a free second.

"I don't have many plans these days. I just kinda, like, soon as I can get stuff done," she said. "It's something I really want to do, so hopefully it will be done soon."

Researchers make an RGB laser with a regular laser and quantum dots

Researchers make an RGB laser with a regular laser and quantum dots

The problem with lasers is, they tend to generate just a single color or light. To get more than one hue requires actually combining more than one type of laser to produce red, green and blue. But researchers at Brown University have figured out a solution to creating small RGB lasers by using colloidal quantum dots, or CQDs. The idea of leveraging the properties of the thin film isn't new, but past attempts to use CQDs in semiconductor lasers have failed because the necessary energy tends to wind up as heat instead of light. The work around scientists found was to excite the various dot sizes with a laser then filter out original light source. Unfortuneately, the solution is far from practical for use in commercial products, but it does represent a milestone in the march towards a single-material multi-wavelength laser. For more details check out the source link.
